What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a common problem that involves hearing noises that are not caused by an outside source. Sounds that are heard can include ringing, hissing, buzzing, throbbing, or whooshing. It can vary in each person and maybe occur in 1 or both ears or in your head.

What causes it?

Although it’s not always clear what causes it, it has been linked with conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disorders, some forms of hearing loss, taking certain medication, Meniere’s disease and blockages of the ear due to a build-up of wax. Your ENT specialist will be able to tall through with you what can be causing your tinnitus and work with you to ease your tinnitus.

How can I ease my tinnitus?

Making sure you are relaxed can be beneficial, and can be done in a number of ways including yoga or deep breathing. It is recommended that you avoid total silence, therefore, listening to music or sounds can be effective in distracting you from the tinnitus and making sure you are not focused on this as it could make it worse. People can often find it helpful to join a support group as talking to other people with tinnitus may help you to cope. Finding ways to improve your sleep such as creating a routine that you can stick to may also be helpful.

How can it be treated?

You will need to be examined by your doctor, who can assess the severity and what is causing this as well as if it can be treated. The treatment will be recommended by Jonathan Hughes for your individual needs and can include, ear wax removal, treating your ear infection, whilst checking for any hearing loss.
