What is Vasomotor Rhinitis?
Vasomotor rhinitis is a form of non-allergic rhinitis where the blood vessels inside the nose are overly sensitive and react to triggers that are not related to allergies or infections. This reaction causes the nasal lining to swell, leading to a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. Unlike allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis is not caused by pollen, dust, or pets, and allergy tests are usually negative.
Causes of Vasomotor Rhinitis
The exact cause is not fully understood, but the condition is thought to involve abnormal nerve control of the blood vessels in the nose. Triggers can include changes in weather or temperature, strong smells such as perfumes or smoke, alcohol, spicy foods, pollution, or hormonal changes. Stress and certain medications, including overuse of nasal decongestant sprays, can also worsen symptoms.
Symptoms of Vasomotor Rhinitis
Common symptoms include a persistently blocked nose, a runny nose with clear discharge, and frequent sneezing. Unlike allergic rhinitis, symptoms are not associated with itching or watery eyes, and they may occur at any time of year rather than being seasonal. Symptoms may come and go, sometimes worsening suddenly when exposed to irritants or environmental changes.
Treatment Options
There is no single cure for vasomotor rhinitis, but symptoms can usually be managed. Avoiding known triggers wherever possible is helpful. Saline sprays and rinses can keep the nasal passages clear and reduce irritation. Nasal sprays containing steroids or other medications may be prescribed to control swelling and reduce discharge. In some patients, procedures to shrink the swollen nasal lining or reduce the sensitivity of the nerves in the nose can provide longer-term relief. An ENT specialist can carry out a nasal endoscopy to rule out other causes and recommend the most effective treatment.
